Visualization
and
Philosophy

When practicing Waves of the Universe your hands trace a vertical ellipse through the space in front of you. Imagine that the motion of your arms and hands represent the path of ocean waves on the shore. As your arms extend and hands lower imagine that you can see the waves receding back into the ocean. As your arms raise and come back toward you, imagine that you can see the swell of the wave as it washes up on shore.
The waves created by your arms and hands as you rock forward and back represent the highs, the lows, and the transitions between them that often come with major life events such as birth, death, beginnings and endings of relationships, educational milestones, changes in work circumstance, medical issues, and relocation of living accomodations.
These events and our percieved need to try and control them can have significant impact on our emotional stability, creating stress and leaving us feeling as if life is out of control. This move reminds us that like the waves of the ocean, we can be fluid and keep moving through the ups and downs that often come with life's major events. Rather than fight things or try to control them, we can just let them transition on their own course in their own time.

Purpose/ Benefits

Practicing Waves of the Universe while keeping in mind the philosophy that goes with it can help to calm us and reduce feelings of being out of control. The move reminds us that major life events often take on a life their own. Not only should we not try to control things, it is quite likely that (just like with the waves) it is not really possible to control them even if we try.
We have the option to recognize that unexpected things will happen without being obligated to "fix" them. In this way we can potentially remove some of the self-imposed concerns that are draining our energy. This will allow us to be calmer and more available to be present and supportive during major life events.
