When practicing Calming the Waters of the Heart imagine yourself standing in water up to the level of your heart. Let your hands float along the surface of the water as your arms extend straight forward in front and then sweep out to each side of you.

The movement of the arms reminds us that the most effective place to focus our energy/attention is on those things that are directly in front of us or just a little off to either side.
1) There is nothing we can do about things in the past.
2) Things too far in the future, even if they are directly in front of us, might change or go away before they are close enough for us to have an influence on them.
3) We only have minimal influence on things off to the side. These things are not a primary focus and might not ever be close enough to affect us or allow us to influence them.

Practicing Calming the Waters of the Heart while keeping in mind the philosophy that goes with it can help to calm and reduce feelings of being overwhelmed. The move reminds us that we don't have to address everything on our plate at once. We have the option to prioritize and potentially remove some of the things that are draining our energy.

As the demands on our energy lessen, so does our stress. We can relax and focus our energy where it will have the greatest benefit.
